In this entry, I unpack the ways in which narrative has been conceptualized within the social sciences, exploring the most cited recent literature that empirically examines how narrative works in politics. I examine both quantitative and qualitative approaches to narrative. I then focus on the literature regarding the case of China, as well as narrative’s role in conflict and peace. To conclude, I chart future directions for research on narrative.
