Cílem knihy je otevřít cestu k možnému pochopení toho, jak vznikají normativní texty – zákony. Na rozdíl od mytických vyprávění totiž za nimi stojí konkrétní lidé, se kterými můžeme o procesu psaní hovořit. Jsou to především legislativci, tedy zaměstnanci a zaměstnankyně legislativních odborů, kteří, velmi zjednodušeně řečeno, mají na starost „paragrafové“ znění zákonů (tj. návrhy právních předpisů). Jednotlivé části této knihy pak budou na základě známé teorie a empirických dat z hloubkových rozhovorů odpovídat na otázky, které se týkají vzniku právních textů, specificky pak především textů zákonů. Jaká je sociální praxe „psaní“ legislativního textu? Kdo a co má vliv na výslednou podobu zákona? Kdo je autorem a jaké to je být legislativcem? A může mít psaní textu vliv na jeho interpretaci?

Law is a human activity endowed with symbolic power. Lawyers are people with the ability to understand texts that not everyone understands. This orientation gives them the ability to manoeuvre in nooks and crannies of society better than others. They are indispensable for many acts, some others cannot be carried out without at least the physical presence of texts of a legal nature (e.g. the contracts we sign). It is almost impossible to find a conduct that is not a subject to legal regulation, even when the lawyers or their texts are not physically present. Even in such a case, however, the conduct is subject to the law, which is expressed by the text.
