Portály a fasády poutních chrámů hráli ve zkušenosti pouti klíčovou roli: jednalo se o první ikonický zážitek, který poutník zažíval při příchodu ke chrámu. Kristus v apsidě se tak pro unaveného poutníka mohl stát vidění, ale také reklamou pro to, aby to kostela vůbec vstoupil.

The portals and facades of pilgrimage temples played a key role in the experience of pilgrimage: it was the first iconic experience that the pilgrim had when approaching the temple. Christ in the apse could thus become a vision for the weary pilgrim, but also an advertisement for entering the church in the first place.
