Na příkladu výzkumné sondy ukazujeme, jak literárně-vědná tradice obohatila interpretační rámce sociálně-vědního výzkumu, a to díky metodě strukturalistické analýzy výpovědí respektive konceptu chronotopu. Tématem výzkumu bylo vnímání a každodenní užívání veřejného prostoru před Hlavním nádražím ČD v Brně. První z přístupů demonstrujeme na analýze provedených rozhovorů, která ilustruje, jak se popis každodenních činností v tomto z hlediska běžného pozorovatele obyčejném prostoru odehrává v mezích sdílených, kulturně významných binárních opozic. Druhý přístup je inspirován Bachtinovým konceptem chronotopu, který v sociálně-geografickém pojetí akcentuje neoddělitelnost času a prostoru, jejich vzájemnou souvztažnost a podmíněnost, hovoří o řadě časovostí, které ve svém průniku spoluvytvářejí konkrétní místa. Je aplikován při analýze mentálních map, video a fotodokumentace zaměřené na trajektorie lidí, jejich rychlosti, směry, intenzitu a polyrytmickou integritu zkoumaného místa.

Drawing on results of an empirical study conducted in the city of Brno in spring 2010, we try to show how were the interpretation frameworks of the social sciences enriched by the tradition of literature studies, especially thanks to the structuralist method and to the concept of the chronotope. The main research topic was how the specific place – public space in front of the main railway station in Brno – is perceived and experienced by its everyday users. The first of our approaches is based on the qualitative analysis of in-depth interviews. It illustrates how are the narratives on everyday spatial practices structured and framed within this space by shared culturally meaningful binary oppositions. The second approach is inspired by Bachtin's concept of chronotope that (in its modification within the social geography) accentuate inseparability of time and space and their mutual conditionality. The concept brings our attention to the set of temporalities which, in their intersection, form the concrete places. The concept of chronotope is applied in analysis of mental maps, video and photo documentation focused on the people's trajectories, pace, directions, intensity and polyrhythmic integrity of the place surveyed.
