And the technically most complex cardiology branch is arrhythmology. The clinical engineers serve for electrophysiology diagnostics, catheter ablations and implantable cardiac devices implant procedures and follow-ups. The new competency for cardiology clinical engineers is the pre-implant ECG screening for potential subcutaneous cardioverter-defibrillation patients. As the inter-individual variability of subcutaneous cardiac signal is considerable, the patient screening is necessary for identification of the patients, which have a suitable subcutaneous sensing signal. This article describes the technology of subcutaneous defibrillation, the process for the pre-implant testing and the role of cardiac clinical engineer. ER -
