According to Patočka modern era is characterized by unabiguous predominance of technology that is supposed to see the world as a play of forces without a relation to transcendence and being. One has become an addict to things and looking after them – „the government of a day“. The era of total nihilism has started. According to Patočka's conception this crisis contemporary man can be solved only by a fight with forces of a day that can lead to sacrificing of life. Thus one is given over „night of being“ that dominates above everything and at the same time he is finding freedom and authenticity in the community of all the same shaken people.
